The resiliency of Canada’s real estate markets was tested through 2021. Despite this, Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood proved resilient during these challenging economic times.
A relatively young neighborhood in Vancouver, Mount Pleasant is undergoing a major transformation. In the 1980’s it was a blue-collar industrial zone, occupied by manufacturers and repair shops. Then, with the completion of the Olympic Village in False Creek, Mount Pleasant began its transformation into a thriving entertainment district full of hipster coffee shops, craft brewpubs, and vintage clothing stores. It also experienced a massive office boom, with high-tech and animation companies flooding in for a piece of the action.
With the Millennium line extension due for completion in 2025, and the Broadway plan calling for significant densification, I am expecting Mount Pleasant to continue its exponential growth. A few key points:
Main Street – An Emerging Entertainment District
Mount Pleasant is popular with a younger crowd, so you can expect it to be more energetic and dynamic than some other areas of the city, particularly along Main street. Great craft breweries include Brassneck, R&B Ale and Pizza House, Sing Sing, Colony Bar, AJ’s Brooklyn Pizza, and the Cascade Room.
If you feel more like relaxing over a cup of coffee, a few notable mentions are 49th Parallel, Kafka’s Coffee and Tea, and Liberty Bakery and Cafe.
Feeling hungry? some options include Meet On Main, The Acorn, Anh, and Chi, Chickpea, and if you have a sweet tooth, Cartems Donuts.
Shopping? check out Turnabout, F As In Frank or Pulp Fiction Book Store.
Other activities include the Main Street Arts Festival, or a visit to Guelph Park, more affectionately known as Dude Chilling Park.
A Strong Value Proposition
Mount Pleasant real estate trades at a slight discount to Yaletown or False Creek. You can still find quality one-bedroom condos around 600K, and 2 bedrooms under 1M, which represents great value.
